The Dolphins were expected to hire an offensive coach to mentor Tannehill. They wanted a more dynamic leader after the one-note Philbin era, which ended with his firing in October.

And Gase, 37, has made the rounds on the interview circuit over the past two years. He also interviewed this year with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns for their head coaching jobs.

Gase becomes the NFL’s youngest head coach, but he has 16 years of experience at the college and NFL levels, starting as a defensive graduate assistant at LSU under then-coach Nick Saban in 2000.

After stints with the Detroit Lions (2003 to ’07) and San Francisco 49ers (2008), Gase joined the Denver Broncos. He came onto the radar as a head-coaching candidate while working as Peyton Manning’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in Denver and earned positive reviews for his work with Jay Cutler as offensive coordinator in Chicago this past season
